Pregnancy care

Post-natal care

Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine views pregnancy and childbirth as a very important time in the life and health of a woman as she prepares for birth and motherhood. As a result, a lot of emphasis is placed on building up a woman’s strength in the weeks leading up to labour. At present, the merits of acupuncture and acupressure during pregnancy have been recognised in many parts of the world where acupuncture is available in specialised antenatal clinics and maternity hospitals where its benefits have been widely recognised as a safe, gentle and effective treatment that can be used to treat a wide range of conditions.

Early Pregnancy Care

The first few weeks of any pregnancy are exciting and often bring many questions since it is such a delicate stage of pregnancy. At Oranmore Acupuncture Clinic, both Mitra and Sahar are fully trained and experienced in treating the tiniest of bumps. Our pregnancy acupuncture treatments are gentle enough to support the developing foetus whilst effective enough to help promote a healthy, happy pregnancy for both mother and baby.

Nausea & Morning Sickness

Research has shown acupuncture to be a very effective tool in reducing both the severity and the incidence of nausea and vomiting during pregnancy as well as providing a safe and effective treatment for women experiencing nausea and dry retching during pregnancy. Acupuncture treatment can also help to boost energy in the pregnant woman as well as helping to relax her so as that she can cope better with all the changes that her body is undergoing.

Pregnancy related Musculo-Skeletal Pain

Common musculo-skeletal problems occurring in pregnancy include back pain, rib pain, sciatica and symphysis pubis (pelvic) pain and can all benefit from acupuncture treatment.

Breech & Posterior presenting Babies

Acupuncture and Moxibustion therapy can be offered to women from 33 weeks onwards in cases of breech and posterior foetal positioning with research showing that it can be significantly effective in helping to turn breeched babies. Ideally, treatment should begin at 34-35 weeks but it can still be of benefit later in pregnancy. As with any pregnancy related condition, acupuncture for breech and posterior presenting babies should be used to supplement the expert care being provided by your doctor, midwife and ante-natal team.

Labour Preparatory Treatment

Research has shown that acupuncture for labour preparation beginning 3-4 weeks prior to labour can be of significant benefit to women with a midwifery study in New Zealand indicating that acupuncture for labour preparation yielded a reduction in women requiring medical induction and emergency Caesarean sections. At Oranmore Acupuncture Clinic, we offer labour preparatory treatments for women in the later stages of their pregnancy in addition to the pregnancy acupuncture treatments available as we have found acupuncture in the later stages of pregnancy to be a very positive and beneficial adjunct to any ante-natal care that our patients are receiving. Our labour preparatory treatment program can be commenced at 35 weeks has been received with much positivity and enthusiasm with many women giving feedback that they found their labour to be shorter and less exhausting.

Post-Natal Care

Acupuncture places great emphasis on post-natal care as it recognises the impact that childbirth can have on a woman. At Oranmore Acupuncture Clinic our post-natal treatments utilise the calming effects of acupuncture and can be very beneficial for women who may feel overwhelmed by the early stages of motherhood whilst issues such as lactation difficulties and post-partum pain can also benefit from acupuncture. Post-natal acupuncture is also perfect for new mums who want to take steps to relax and regain their strength after giving birth.

Babies & Children

Post-natal care

Acupuncture can be used to treat a wide range of conditions in children to great effect. Whilst the diagnostic techniques and principles underlying the treatment are similar to those used in acupuncture for adults, the approach for our younger patients is totally different and tailored to each child according to their individual needs. At Oranmore Acupuncture Clinic our paediatric acupuncture treatment is combined with acupressure and paediatric massage techniques to provide a gentle, soothing treatment that is gentle enough for the tiniest of patients. In many cases we will also demonstrate techniques that parents can use at home to support and reinforce the treatments received at our clinic.
