Cosmetic Acupuncture

Cosmetic acupuncture is a specialised form of acupuncture treatment that combines body acupuncture points with facial acupuncture points to specifically target the skin and face. Acupuncture for facial rejuvenation is based on the same principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine that allow acupuncture to treat a variety of conditions in the clinic. These principles are harnessed and combined with specialised facial diagnosis and techniques to yield a customised facial treatment that can be used to treat a wide range of facial issues including:
- Eyes: Dark Circles, Puffy bags, Crows Feet, Drooping eyelids
- Lines: Fine lines and wrinkles
- Problem Skin: Acne, Rosacea, Psoriasis
- Complexion: Dull, tired skin
Each session lasts approximately an hour and begins with a consultation during which a past medical history is taken and the desired outcomes of the treatment are discussed. Once a treatment plan has been formulated and tailored to your individual facial needs, a series of very fine, sterile acupuncture needles are inserted into acupuncture points both on the body and on the face so as to not only target specific areas of the face, but also to increase blood circulation and oxygenation of the facial tissues. The needles are retained for 20-40 minutes after which they are removed and facial massage and acupressure is applied to encourage further blood flow and to improve lymphatic drainage around the face. If required, dietary and skincare recommendations may also be made on a case-by-case basis.

Whilst some patients see an immediate difference in their face after treatment, the number of sessions required varies from patient to patient and is affected by factors such as facial muscle tone, the depth of the lines on the face and skin tone. On average, a typical course of treatment consists of 10-12 sessions carried out over a number of months so as to ensure a longer lasting result. Whilst for many people results can be seen after a few treatments, a course of sessions is advised to prolong the effects of the facial rejuvenation long after the course of treatment has ended. It is important to bear in mind that acupuncture for facial rejuvenation is not a facelift, but rather a gradual method of improving and toning the skin and facial tissue. Maintenance treatments are carried out as needed once the initial course of treatment has ended but are recommended 2-3 times a year.
